Inspirit santa fe8/2/2023 Nevertheless, Descartes Labs has developed an impressive system that could help mitigate the devastating impact of wildfires. However, some potential flaws in the model include potential false detections of hot areas as fires which could lead to a waste of effort for evacuation and unnecessary panic. The capabilities of the system are definitely impressive in its ability to identify wildfires spanning just 10 acres. Descartes has been testing its AI system by sending alerts to officials in New Mexico when a potential fire has been detected. These algorithms help identify hotspots which could indicate a potential fire in the area. Another algorithm looks for a shift in thermal data. One algorithm compares the current satellite image to what the area would have looked like without a fire identifying any changes such as image color change or brightness. This AI software has been developed through several algorithms that identify different properties of fires in order to come to a holistic conclusion on whether the fire is truly there or not. Descartes Labs in Santa Fe developed an AI system that was trained on satellite imagery. Fortunately, through the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Artificial Intelligence, wildfires could be identified mere minutes after they start. Due to the rapid nature in which wildfires spread, it is essential to detect wildfires as early as possible in order to effectively counter their devastating effects. Application of AI in WildFire Detection Due to rising temperatures and increasingly dry land, forest fires have been devastatingly growing throughout California. Overall, utilizing AI for Oil Spills vastly contributes to marine & human health, and clean-up costs, and environmental preservation. With oil spills, timely detection is necessary in order for an efficient cleanup process to counter the spill. AI systems can identify spills faster than humans enabling clean-up to start faster. AI also vastly improves the efficiency of the oil spill response. In fact, this could help distribute human efforts to other tasks in regards to clean up. Due to oil spills occurring deep below the water, AI systems are vastly more suited for the task than humans, With AI and Unmanned Vehicles being utilized for oil spill detection, humans don’t have to do all the work. Moreover, AI can also help reduce the burden of marine workers who put themselves in danger. AI can help reduce this human error by helping Unmanned Vehicles navigate to read with oil leakages more efficiently. Firstly, the negative impacts of oil spills are often fueled by human error. AI offers a multitude of benefits in helping oil spill detection. AI coupled with remote sensing vehicles and sensors can help counter these accidents in turn contributing heavily to environmental and ocean preservation. This is one of the many devastating oil accidents that result in massive clean-up efforts and detrimental effects on the environment. The Benefits of AI for Oil Spill Detection Last year an accident in Houston resulted in over 9,000 gallons of oil being spilled into the ocean. I hope to find inspiration myself for potential projects that I can partake in for the betterment of the environment through my research on the various applications of Artificial Intelligence being leveraged for the environment. Through my blog, I hope to reach individuals passionate about countering environmental issues. Each blog will be focused on a different Artificial Intelligence technology that helps counter different environmental issues occurring throughout the world. For this blog, I will be writing about the Application of Artificial Intelligence to the Environment. My project mentor was Maya Verma, and I worked on the DNA Detectives project where I learned to leverage AI in order to identify the countries from which different Sars-Cov-2 genomes originate. I had a great time as an Inspirit AI Scholar and I gained a lot of insight into actually working with AI. I am studying AI because I want to explore its impact on solving issues we are currently struggling with and make things easier overall. I currently am a part of a FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics Team and I enjoy looking for ways to leverage technology to help environments, nonprofits, and businesses. My name is Nithik and I am a high school student passionate about CS, AI, Robotics, and the environment.
